Hualalai Resort gets its name from the dormant volcano that rises above the resort and the nearby city of Kailua-Kona. Of the main resorts in the area this one is the most exclusive. It's home to the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai, a five-star hotel, and the Hualalai Golf Course. Inside the resort property there are several beaches to choose from, but parking for them is limited so you have to get there early. When you enter at the gated greeter's station you'll have to state which beach parking lot you are going to and they'll give you the appropriate parking pass. Kukio Beach is probably the best of the Hualalai beaches with unique large grain sand, wonderful swimming and snorkeling, and abundant sea turtles. It also has anchialine ponds to view. If you have kids with you consider going to Kikaua Point Beach which has a protected swimming cove for little ones (it's also called Kukio Keiki Beach). The beach at the Four Seasons is adequate and has a couple small shallow spots for floating around. Even if you don't get into the water, walking around the waterfront on paths or on the sand is wonderful. The hidden gem in this resort is the Kalaemano Cultural Reserve Shoreline where you can walk out to a remote shoreline with historical sites and petroglyphs. And that public parking lot is never crowded. You don't have to be staying at the Four Seasons to enjoy what this resort has to offer, you just need to know where to go when you get there.
