About Ooma Beach on Kona & West Island, Hawaii
O’oma Beach is a relatively new public beach park with access to an excellent shoreline just north of Kailua-Kona. O’oma Beach was purchased by Hawaii County at the end of 2013. This purchase added 217 acres of public land and over a half mile of prized shoreline just north of Kohanaiki Beach Park and Kohanaiki Golf and Ocean Club (a private community).
Snorkeling at O’oma is pretty good when the waves are calm. The best beach and water access point is located near the middle of this beach park. Trees provide shade along most of this linear park so bring beach chairs and stay for a while.
While this beach can be accessed from the north at Wawaloli Beach, the best access is from the south end as it avoids very rugged lava rocks in the road. To get to this southern access, turn toward the ocean off Highway 19 onto Hulikoa Drive and go right at the roundabout (the only option). Follow signs that say “Beach Park” and “Beach Access” as they point to the entrance for both O’oma Beach and Kohanaiki Beach Park. When the road gets to the shoreline there’s a paved parking lot on the right which is a good option for walking into Ooma. If you don’t mind driving a dusty road, there’s a road that goes northward just beyond the parking lot. Many locals take this road and park their vehicles under the shade trees just behind the beach. Make note of the time posted on the gate as you drive or walk in as they’ll close the gate then. Portable toilets are provided along this dirt road behind the beach.
