About Keaukaha Beach Park on Hilo & East Island, Hawaii
Keaukaha Beach Park is a long park spanning about one-third of a mile of the Hilo waterfront just east of downtown. The park has ample lawns and easy access to the waters of Puhi Bay, but it lacks restrooms and other facilities. The biggest draw here is walking the park’s rocky shoreline and a finding the hidden swimming hole.
The swimming hole at Keaukaha Beach Park is located to the far right. To get there you’ll have to walk through the park staying as far to the east as you can. A concrete platform is used by locals to jump into the water, but you should check the water depth before jumping in from it or any other structures. Note that waves can still enter this semi-protected pool and create currents as water rushes out. Swimming is only recommended when the pool is calm. The surfing area known as “Chocks” is just beyond this swimming area.
Keaukaha Park has three parking lots with entrances from Kalanianaole Street. Between these lots you will find parking spaces along the street shoulder, just make sure your car is completely off the pavement if you use them. Portable toilets are sometimes provided near the middle of the park where you’ll find picnic tables too. Another small lot that might be gated closed is along Apapane Road. This one is convenient if you are heading to the swimming hole.
Finding Keaukaha Beach Park is easy as it’s well-signed on Kalanianaole Street just east of the downtown waterfront.
Camping is not allowed at Keaukaha Beach Park, but in the past long-term campers/squatters have used the park and made it undesirable for visitors. The city and state have recently worked hard to clean it up. Hopefully it will stay open and available for day-use for everyone.
