About Kapaa Beach Park on Kohala & North Island, Hawaii
Kapa’a Beach Park is a small park on the Big Island’s northwest shore not far from Hawi. It doesn’t have a sandy beach, but snorkelers will enjoy this spot when the water is calm. Camping and picnicking are other reasons to drive out to this remote spot.
The park’s campground has camp spots right along the shore. They must be reserved ahead of time online through the Hawaii County website. There is no potable water so bring all the water you’ll need if you plan to stay overnight here. Ironically there’s a large old water tank standing tall between the picnic area and the camping area.
Picnic tables are provided and there’s an excellent covered pavilion right above the waterline with great views and usually a gentle breeze. Views across the water include Haleakala on Maui and even the islands of Lanai and Kaho’olawe on a clear day.
Kapaa Beach Park is a quiet spot for relaxing and watching the waves or the sunset. The park is open 6am to 11pm and alcoholic beverages are allowed at your picnic table or beach chair from 10am to 10pm.
Getting to Kapaa Beach Park is easy as driving Highway 270 south from Hawi (about six miles) or north from Waimea or Waikoloa and other resort areas on the Kona side of the island. The park is well-signed on the highway and less than a mile from the turn.
