About Waiulaula Gulch Beach on Kona & West Island, Hawaii
Waiulaula Gulch Beach is truly a hidden beach and surprisingly located in one of the best-known resorts on the Big Island. This beach is small, but it is a serene place that you might have all to yourself.
Waiulaula Gulch is a bit tricky to find, but if you can get to Mau’umae Beach, you’ll just have to walk a little bit farther to find this one. Follow directions to Mau’umae (pronounced Mow My) at the Mauna Kea Resort. As you go into the resort you’ll have to ask for a parking pass for Mau’umae (it should include a map).
After you park your car, hike to Mau’umae Beach and continue south on the Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail. In about a quarter-mile this trail will drop you into Waiulaula Gulch which has two small coves separated by lava rock. The southern cove has a bit more space behind the beach, but the beaches are about the same size (again, not very big). Depending on the time of day, either cove might have more shade from trees on the side.
Swimming here can be good if the surf is safe, but watch for currents pulling away from shore. Remember that this is a hidden beach and it has zero facilities including no lifeguards.
Signs along the Ala Kahakai Trail make it clear that this beach is between Mauna Kea Beach and Spencer Beach Park so you can hike up and down the coast as you want.
Be sure to return your parking pass to the resort’s entrance station if you leave well before sunset (they close the gate 30 minutes after sunset). This allows someone else to get to these magnificent beaches that day.
