About Chocks Beach (Chalks) on Hilo & East Island, Hawaii
This hidden beach access is frequently referred to online as either Chalks Beach or Chocks Beach, but either way it is pronounced “Choks”. It seems to be the surfers that spell it Chocks as the break located between this access and Keaukaha Beach Park is spelled Chocks on surf report websites. No matter how you spell it, this is a great place to investigate the shoreline near Hilo.
As you explore around, mostly on lava rocks, you’ll find massive tidepools and places to swim. You’ll also find a small pebbly beach and sandy spots behind the lava shore. From the beach access continue for a while to your right you’ll be going around Keokea Point toward Onekahakaha Beach Park, but you probably can’t get there without getting wet. Walk out on the rocky points to see the waves crashing and flowing in and out of narrow channels. From some of these points you’ll have unobstructed views of downtown Hilo.
To find this hidden beach, drive east on Kamehameha Avenue on the Hilo waterfront and continue onto Kalanianaole Street. Turn left onto Keokea Loop Road and continue to the end where you’ll find a white and blue “Shoreline Public Access” sign pointing to the beach entrance. Park wherever you can find a spot (only room for 5-6 cars near the access), but don’t block the road or any driveways. Surfers can also get into the water from Keaukaha Beach Park too.
Chocks Beach is a county park access so their rules apply (e.g. no pets). The beach hours are 7am to 7pm daily.
