Onekahakaha Beach Park

Onekahakaha Beach Park is a popular place for families in Hilo. Swimming, picnicking, tossing a football, and even horseshoes are possible at this park.

Onekahakaha is known for its large shallow pools that are protected by natural lava and a man-made lava rock wall. Kids can play in the water safely here and be protected from the waves. If you visit on the weekends or during the summer months, there’s the added protection of lifeguards watching the pools. Note that these pools are tidal so they can be different depending on the tides.

This large grass park has numerous picnic areas both covered and out in the open. Most offer a picnic spot that’s within view of the wading pools.

To get to Onekahakaha Beach Park head east from downtown Hilo and turn off Kalanianaole Street onto Onekahakaha Road. After you enter the park gate there are two roads leading to two different parking areas. The lot on the right is more popular as it’s closer to the restrooms and the better pool which has steps, a ramp, and even a small sandy beach.

When you enter the yellow gate at the park, look at the hours that are posted if you plan to stay through the end of the day.

Next to Onekahakaha Beach Park, you’ll find Uncle David K. Calles Sr. Horseshoe Court. These horseshoe pits are open daily from around 9am to 6pm.
