About Carlsmith Beach Park on Hilo & East Island, Hawaii
Carlsmith Beach Park is one of many parks along Kalanianaole Street east of downtown Hilo, but it might be the best of them all. The large protected saltwater lagoons are great for swimming, floating, snorkeling, and stand-up paddleboarding. Many paths meander through the park making this a great place to walk around. Like most beach parks in Hilo this one doesn’t have a sand beach, but it’s an excellent place to hangout.
Getting into the water here isn’t difficult, but a short concrete landing with a ladder makes it even easier. You’ll find the ladder at a swimming area a little farther into the park. Just offshore there’s a small island with sand, rocks and trees that attracts kids who swim over to it. Lifeguards are on hand on during the summer months and on weekends when the park is busiest.
While exploring the park, you’ll find pathways leading to picturesque spots, swimming holes, picnic tables, ponds with bridges, and more. Take some time to walk around and see what you’ll find. Sea turtles are a common sight here, but give them lots of space if you encounter them.
The parking lot for Carlsmith Beach Park is smallish but there are spots along the shoulder of Kalanianaole Street too. Another lesser-known parking lot for this park can be found at the intersection of Kalanianaole and Lokoaka Street. A trail from that lot passes through dense vegetation and goes around the Mauna Loa Shores condo building to Carlsmith Beach Park in a couple hundred yards.
