About Hawaiian Paradise Park Shoreline Access on Hilo & East Island, Hawaii

The large housing subdivision of Hawaiian Paradise Park (HPP) near Hilo has a rocky shoreline that spans about two and a half miles and has several public shoreline access points. There is no sandy beach there, but it’s a great place to get out for a walk and look for tidepools.

The best shoreline access in HPP is along Beach Road south of the intersection with Paradise Ala Kai Road and north of the intersection with Ala Heiau Road. Beach Road doesn’t go through in the middle and instead has two dead end roads at this gap known as Paradise Cliffs. Parking is abundant at both ends and you can explore this shore in either direction on mostly smooth pahoehoe lava.

Another public shoreline access is at the end of Paradise Ala Kai Road near where it connects with Beach Road. There you’ll find a few parking spaces and easy access to the shore through a gap in rock walls.

The southern access is a superb one too. It’s located at the south end of Ala Heiau Road near Maku’u Point. From there you can easily get to the shelf above the ocean and explore in either direction. Tidepools are plentiful in this area.

To get to the shore in HPP, drive Highway 130 south from the Hilo area and turn onto either Paradise Drive or Makuu Drive. Both of these roads descend to the ocean in just over four miles.
