About Kahakai Park on Hilo & East Island, Hawaii
Kahakai Park is a small county park on the shore of the housing subdivision known as “Hawaiian Beaches”. Despite the name, this community and its entire waterfront does not have a beach, let alone a sandy one. But it does have a couple coastal parks that are popular with local residents.
The shoreline at Kahakai Park is all rock and mostly cliffs. You can find a way to get down to the water level near the park, but the waves typically pound this northeast-facing shore so it’s not a great place for swimming. Watching the sun rise and relaxing above the waves are the best ways to enjoy this shoreline. The park has large open lawns, but lacks picnic tables. There’s another access to the shore along Welea Street that’s walking distance from Kahakai Park.
East of Kahakai Park you’ll find Papio Ocean Park with shoulder parking available. This is a private park with its own set of rules posted. Papio Ocean Park has grass, benches, picnic tables, and artwork, but access to the shoreline is difficult now that the vegetation has become overgrown.
Public access hours at Kahakai Park are 7am to 8pm daily. Papio Ocean Park is open sunrise to sunset.
