Honomalino Bay Beach

Honomalino Beach is a remote black sand beach located south of Miloli’i Beach Park. Getting there requires a hike of about three-quarters of a mile, but it’s worth the effort as it’s a picturesque spot and usually not busy, especially if you go mid-week.

To find the trailhead, turn off Highway 11 and drive down Miloli’i Road to the very end and park in the lot near the covered picnic pavilion and the bright yellow Hauoli Kamanoa Church. This drive takes a little over an hour from Kailua-Kona. Don’t leave any valuables in your car.

The trail begins just beyond the restrooms building and is signed “Honomolino / Okoe Bay” (note the different spelling). Do not walk down the road which says “stay out”. You’ll have to go over logs and duck under trees along this unique trail. Signs and arrows painted on the rocks help direct the way. The hike takes about a half-hour each way so budget that much time when you leave Honomalino Beach to get back to your car.

Signs along the path mention that sea turtles and Hawaiian monk seals could be present at Honomalino. If you see these animals stay way back to avoid stressing them out.

Camping is not allowed at Honomalino Bay, but it is at Miloli’i Beach Park if you reserve your spot online before getting down there. Consult the county website for booking a camp spot.

Pack everything you’ll need to eat and drink for the day as the water at Miloli’i Park is not potable and there are no stores in Miloli’i. If you are camping, bring all the water you’ll need for your entire stay.

The hike to Okoe Bay Beach is another 1.6 miles one-way from Honomalino and is also just for day-hiking.
