About Honomalino Bay Beach on Kona & West Island, Hawaii
Honomalino Beach is a remote black sand beach located south of Miloli’i Beach Park. Getting there requires a hike of about three-quarters of a mile, but it’s worth the effort as it’s a picturesque spot and usually not busy, especially if you go mid-week.
To find the trailhead, turn off Highway 11 and drive down Miloli’i Road to the very end and park in the lot near the covered picnic pavilion and the bright yellow Hauoli Kamanoa Church. This drive takes a little over an hour from Kailua-Kona. Don’t leave any valuables in your car.
The trail begins just beyond the restrooms building and is signed “Honomolino / Okoe Bay” (note the different spelling). Do not walk down the road which says “stay out”. You’ll have to go over logs and duck under trees along this unique trail. Signs and arrows painted on the rocks help direct the way. The hike takes about a half-hour each way so budget that much time when you leave Honomalino Beach to get back to your car.
Signs along the path mention that sea turtles and Hawaiian monk seals could be present at Honomalino. If you see these animals stay way back to avoid stressing them out.
Camping is not allowed at Honomalino Bay, but it is at Miloli’i Beach Park if you reserve your spot online before getting down there. Consult the county website for booking a camp spot.
Pack everything you’ll need to eat and drink for the day as the water at Miloli’i Park is not potable and there are no stores in Miloli’i. If you are camping, bring all the water you’ll need for your entire stay.
The hike to Okoe Bay Beach is another 1.6 miles one-way from Honomalino and is also just for day-hiking.

Switch back drive down Milolii rd, park by basket ball court. Be mindful of PRIVATE property. Know the area before you go. Oldest fishing village on Big Island. Excellent private Beach, calm waters, black sand, hike in 15 min., water shoes are a must as walking in the ocean with no beach access is part of the trail. Be respectful of the Milolii village their privacy is required. Take your trash & things with you when you leave. Have a blessed & beautiful day ~ Aloha 🌺
We arrived at the parking lot and a woman was taking pictures of our license plate and telling us we should not park at the state park and go on the hike.
I talked with a local youth pastor who confirmed that yep, you should not park and take a hike as the hike goes through private property.
Tourists are clearly not welcome in this place. Not worth the long Twisty Road.
If you follow the directions given in the text “ABOUT HONOMALINO BAY BEACH ON KONA & WEST ISLAND, HAWAII” you will have wasted your time. Locals guard the parking lot and picnic area and will chase you out unless you know someone local and have an invite. We were told the trail described in the text is NOT PUBLIC. Neither the road you are warned against or the trail described. Locals are very adamant about keeping haole out!
