About Hokulia Shoreline Park on Kona & West Island, Hawaii
Shoreline Park at the Hokulia Resort is one of the most underutilized parks in the Kona area. It’s a wonderful place to walk around and has countless historical Hawaiian sites to see.
After getting to the park, the trail will begin on the north side of the parking lot. From there, follow the path as it meanders next to the Hokulia Golf Course and passes by several rock walls that are part of a former large settlement. When you get to the shoreline you’ll find picnic tables and pockets of sand behind the lava shore.
The best stuff to see is to the south (left when looking at the ocean). Walk on the lava shoreline for a short distance and look for rugged roads that double as a hiking trail. Eventually this turns more into a trail and it continues for over a mile before ending abruptly on the shoulder of Pu’u Ohau (a volcanic vent) just after a golf green. Keep your eyes peeled for rock walls and other man-made structures that were constructed eons ago. Be very careful not to disturb any rock piles or anything else that you discover.
If you like tidepooling, you’ll find incredible pools along this very irregular shoreline, but stay back from the cliffs.
To get to Hokulia Shoreline Park, drive Alii Highway south from Keauhou for about 4.5 miles. On the right you’ll find the entrance to Hokulia Resort (Halekii Street goes inland from the highway at this intersection). Stop at the entrance station and ask for a parking pass for Shoreline Park. After leaving the entrance station, follow the “Shoreline Access” signs which will get you to the parking lot in about two miles. Be sure to put the parking pass on your car dash and heed all the rules. Hokulia Park is on private property and open to the public. By being good stewards of the park and the historical sites here we can keep it open to everyone. Daily park hours are 7am to 15 minutes after sunset.
