About Keauhou Bay & Harbor on Kona & West Island, Hawaii
Keauhou Bay Beach Park is a modest park on Keauhou Harbor that get’s little attention. It’s a great place to start a walk or get into the water. Interpretive signs along a walking path here explain the history of this bay including the birthplace of King Kamehameha III.
You can access this park from the north via Kamehameha III Road or from the south via Kaleiopapa Street. Both roads have public parking at the end, but the restrooms are on the south side near the large boat ramp.
There are several ways to get into the water of Keauhou Bay. The park has a stairway into the water and there’s a hand-carried boat ramp where the local outrigger canoe club, Keauhou Canoe Club, can launch their crafts. There’s also a public sandy beach on the north side which is adjacent to a private park called Ka’ili’ilinehe Beach Park. If you have a big boat to launch there’s a spot for you too (access via Kaleiopapa St).
Snorkelers that get in on the north side of the bay should hug the north shore. If you want to snorkel on the south side, walk over to the Outrigger Kona Resort shoreline access.
Many sea-based tours leave from the harbor including sailing, charter fishing, snorkeling cruises, kayaking to sea caves, and highly recommended manta ray night tours. If you are interested in tours, check out Sea Quest Hawaii, Captain Cook Snorkeling, Hawaii Island Ocean Tours, Ocean Safari Kayaks and Anelakai Adventures.
