About Honokohau Beach at Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park on Kona & West Island, Hawaii
Honokohau Beach is a quiet beach in front of Aimakapa Fishpond in Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park. Since you have to walk the shoreline from other points in the park, this one doesn’t get a lot of visitors. It’s a great place to relax and watch the waves rolling in.
The slope of the beach is steep and it’s more of a sandy dunes structure separating the ocean from the pond. Swimming is possible and the best place to get in is near the center of the beach were the entrance is deeper and less rocky, but watch for rip currents.
The fishpond behind the beach is large and feels more like a lake. It’s surrounded by lush vegetation, but the south end isn’t very attractive as there is unsightly items laying around. Look for birds in and around the pond.
There are three ways to get to Honokohau Beach. The shortest option is to park in the parking area for Aiopio Fishtrap Beach at the NW corner of Honokohau Harbor and walk into the park from there. Follow signs on the path for Aimakapa Fishpond and you’ll be at Honokohau Beach in about a half mile of walking. Look for excellent tide pools along the way. The other two options are (1) the parking lot for the national park visitor center off Highway 19 and (2) the parking lot for Kaloko Fishpond. Both of those are about one mile of walking each way, so twice as far, but they are pleasant walks.
The main visitor center parking lot hours are 8:30am to 4pm daily, but the parking lot at Honokohau Harbor is open later and the beaches and park grounds are open during all daylight hours.
