About Kiholo Black Sand Beach & Campground on Kona & West Island, Hawaii

Kiholo Black Sand Beach is located next to the campground in Kiholo State Park Preserve. A day-use parking area is provided next to the campground specifically for access to the black sand beach. Another separate day-use area is for access to Kiholo Queens Bath and for hiking the shoreline north to Wainanalii Pond, a remote cove filled with sea turtles.

The beach at Kiholo Black Sand Beach is mostly pebbles, some quite course, but there is sand mixed in as well. There are two more hidden black sand beaches over the lava flows to the west (left when looking at the water) of Kiholo Black Sand Beach. A section of the Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail meanders along the shore to those two beaches and beyond.

To get to the campground at Kiholo State Park Preserve, drive down the first road south of the signed Scenic Overlook on Highway 19 near the 82 mile marker. Continue down this road about one mile then at an intersection that clearly indicates where the “campsites” are, go left to follow the arrows.

The park closes the gates at the end of the day (which might be 6 or 7pm) so note the posted time if you plan to leave. If you are camping, you’ll be locked in overnight so make sure you have everything you need including food, water, camping gear, etc.
